Starworks Ford-Riley secure Daytona 24 Hours pole ahead of Corvette power
Ryan Dalziel took pole position for the 50th Daytona 24 Hours in his Starworks Motorsport Ford-Riley yesterday.
The Scot set his best lap of 1:41.119 just before the halfway mark, earning a one-tenth advantage over Max Angelelli in the #10 Suntrust Racing Corvette.
The 29-year-old Dalziel is aiming for his second Daytona victory, having won the event in 2010. He will be partnered by in the race by Lucas Luhr, Allan McNish, Alex Popow and Enzo Potolicchio.
Angelelli gave Dalziel a respectable chase during the qualifying session, setting several times that were all good for the top five; however the Italian could do nothing to deprive Dalziel of the top spot.
Twice IZOD IndyCar champion Scott Dixon recorded the 3rd quickest time in the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing BMW-Riley. The Kiwi nudged ahead of Alex Gurney’s Corvette by less than one-tenth, while early pacesetter Antonio Garcia fell to 5th overall come the chequered flag.
Ozz Negri rounded out the top six in the Ford-powered Michael Shank Racing entry. The Brazilian finished the session two spots ahead of the “junior squad”, headed by Michael McDowell.
Indeed McDowell will be the elder hand in a team with Gustavo Yacaman and Jorge Goncalvez (Indy Lights) and Felipe Nasr (2011 British F3 Champion).
Splitting the Michael Shank Racing entries will be #9 Action Express Racing entry qualified by Joao Barbosa.
Three Ford’s and a BMW filled the following two rows, with #2 Starworks Ford-Riley heading the group in 9th. Entries by #77 Doran Ford-Dallara (10th), #50 Alegra BMW-Riley and the #76 Krohn Ford-Lola (12th) were the slowest DP runner.
Neither the #5 Action Express Racing nor the #01 Ganassi Racing BMW-Riley – the reigning Grand-Am champions – could set a time due to engine failures in practice.
In the GT Class, Andrew Davis in the #59 Brumo Racing Porsche GT3 took pole ahead of Jeff Segal’s #69 AIM Autosport Ferrari 458. Segal left it late to set his quickest time, just edging Andy Lally in the #44 Magnus Racing Porsche to 2nd in class.
Patrick Long will line up 4th in the #45 Flying Lizards Porsche ahead of the leading Risi Competizione Ferrari 458, the #45, with Gianmaria Bruni at the wheel.
